It can be really wonderful

If you had told me eight years ago that I would be sitting writing this at a desk in the suburbs of Adelaide, I would not have believed you.

If you had said I would be six years into a loving, gentle, partnership and friendship with a gorgeous man while typing away with cats on my desk and the sound of the chickens in the backyard I would have thought you really should be sharing those drugs or checking in with your therapist.

I came back to Adelaide to study. I wanted to explore and formalise my understanding of sexuality and mental health and did two degrees thinking that they might help. Instead, I learned about myself and what I had been through and that there were some men in my life that were damaging in ways that I had never really understood beyond the fact that I had felt hurt and broken.

So next time I hear a friend of mine talk about a damaging relationship I will no longer just say ‘Oh I know, aren’t men/women bastards’. I will say ‘I really do know and do you need help?’ Because I now know that it can be lovely, with the right person. And some cats.

I even got married again.
