My Flat in St Kilda

It was the first place I had ever really called home.

I only lived there for 10 years but as I had never lived anywhere for more than a year before that, it was a long time. When I moved in, my rent was $140 a week, by the time I moved out it was $440. I actually signed the lease sight unseen as by that stage I knew pretty well what you got for that price in St Kilda in a one-bedroom apartment and it wasn’t a lot. It was about the location and hopefully gas heating and hot water. I only got the gas hot water. The next ten years was comprised of making heating vs cost compromises. At least because my flat was in the middle at the bottom the temperature stayed pretty constant. When I moved in the first neighbours I became friends with were Sandy and Trudy.

Trudy especially. It was pretty awesome to have a friend who was as into food as I was, only metres away.

On the other side of me was a woman my age but who was crazier than I was. She screamed and carried on and swore like the Warfie she actually was. She wasn’t a bad person just a bit intense.

After her, came Shane and his partner. His partner moved out after a bit to go on some reality show where it was then exposed that she had been a stripper and was not going to be a princess after all. Either way, she broke up with Shane to go on a reality…
