The Bloody BC Roller Coaster

My Continuing Adventures with Breast Cancer

My friend described the whole breast cancer journey as a roller coaster and just then, so did my GP.

A roller coaster is an apt description. Most of the time I am doing okay, cruising along. There are even some highs, people being kind, reaching out, being supportive, deciding that it is the perfect excuse to get that massage, book that holiday, prioritise your own needs. And then there are some massive unexpected dips that hit you out of nowhere. Like yesterday.

I was in Bunnings (Hammer Barn for Bluey fans) and my phone rang.

I am still waiting for the call about when my surgery will be. When the phone rings, I jump. And it is a call from Salisbury, so it is very likely to be the hospital. Bloody brilliant. Finally, I will know.

I answer.

It is someone from the Lyell McEwin. I am so happy.

‘Are you okay to go to a different hospital?’ she asks.

What are you crazy? I think to myself.

‘Yes. Yes. Yes,’ I say.

‘It would be a private hospital…’ she starts

‘Yes, fine!’ I interrupt.
