I recently came to the realisation that I needed to make some big changes in my life. This included restructuring the way I work. I got a brilliant new job. In order to start that new job, I needed to do some, not exactly retraining, but a number of refresher courses, in order to feel competent and capable in my new role.

This has meant that once again, writing has had to take a back seat.

But not completely.

I have still managed to do some scribbling. I have created a plan for my Curious Bookshop. I have written a few thousand words of it and even let someone else look at the first thousand or so. The feedback was positive, while understanding that it was a clunky draft, it is heading in the right direction.

As for Dawn 2, I have had a full plot outline written for some time, so I took moments from that and used them as writing exercises. I chose a scene and wrote it in isolation. It is very freeing and enjoyable. I don’t know how much will end up in the finished book, but it seems like a useful way to keep in touch with the plot, to reconnect with the work and just have some good, clean, writing fun.
